Remember Yesterday

Good morning, yesterday
You wake up and time has slipped away
And suddenly it’s hard to find
The memories you left behind
Remember, do you remember?*

Yes, we were this young and unblemished so many years ago. She was a college student fresh out of high school, and I was an airman holding up hats with my ears (still no hair from boot camp). We’re in the basement of what was then the MGM Grand in Reno, Nevada, and we sat for this picture on a whimsy, a lark.

She accepted my proposal a few days later.

A recurring theme in our podcast is that we barely knew each other when we got married, a mutual ignorance exceeding absurdity. What were we thinking?! Couples in arranged marriages know their prospective partners far better than those kids in the picture. Yet here we are forty years since this picture was snapped, still together.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this, but the thing that sticks out is how comfortable we are with each other, even then. She is there for me, supporting me with her hand on my shoulder, and I am ready to stand and be the shield for her. You’re seeing a destiny fulfilled before the pages are even written.

So long ago and nothing has changed.

The next forty years should be twice as fantastic.
